SERMON & STUDY MATERIAL

SERMON TEXT
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
SUMMARY
Pastor Pett's sermon from the Eighth Sunday After Pentecost explores the concept of true wealth in God's eyes, emphasizing that our souls are more valuable than material possessions. Pastor Pett challenges the congregation to shift their focus from earthly treasures to spiritual riches, highlighting the importance of time spent with God and the priceless redemption offered through Jesus Christ.
KEY POINTS
  • Our soul is the most valuable thing according to God
  • Life consists of time, not possessions
  • Being rich toward God means investing time in spiritual matters
  • Greed and covetousness can distract us from what truly matters
  • God's investment in us is demonstrated through Christ's sacrifice
  • The greatest legacy we can leave is teaching others about Jesus

QUOTES FROM PASTOR PETT
So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. Guess what? It's not about money.

If that's the way you feel, come to church, but don't give until you want to. Because I guarantee that if you sit in church and you hear God's word, there's going to come a time where you want to.

Jesus didn't come to sort out our financial issues. Jesus didn't come to make sure everybody's getting a fair deal. Jesus didn't come to balance the budget.

No amount of money can buy a second of time.

What really, really matters, what's of greatest importance and a greater legacy that I can leave for my children, more than any amount of inheritance that I can earn for them is what? A legacy of teaching them, telling them, showing them Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Covetousness is idolatry. So when wealth becomes the idol, then it's wrong.

What is the most valuable thing? Our soul. What is that which alone can pay for it? The suffering, death, and resurrection of the blood of Jesus Christ.

What does God want from you? A little bit of your time. To come into his house and hear his word. To spend some time in his word. You've got some time for God. Spend it with Him. That's how you can be rich toward God.
SERMON-BASED 5-DAY DEVOTIONAL
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon transcription:

Day 1: The True Value of Life
Reading: Luke 12:13-21
Devotional: Today's passage reminds us that life's true value isn't found in material possessions, but in our relationship with God. The rich man in Jesus' parable thought he had it all figured out, storing up wealth for himself. But God called him a fool, for he neglected what truly mattered - his soul. As you reflect today, consider: Where are you storing up your treasures? Are you investing time in your relationship with God, or are you too focused on worldly gains? Remember, your soul is priceless to God. He values your time spent with Him more than any earthly riches. Take a moment to realign your priorities and commit to spending quality time in God's presence.

Day 2: Redeemed by Grace
Reading: Ephesians 1:7-10
Devotional: Paul's words to the Ephesians beautifully capture the essence of our redemption in Christ. We are bought back - not with gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Jesus. This redemption isn't just a legal transaction; it's a lavish outpouring of God's grace. As you meditate on this passage, let the magnitude of God's love wash over you. How does knowing you are redeemed change your perspective on life's challenges? How can you live today in a way that reflects your gratitude for this immeasurable gift? Take time to thank God for His redemption and ask for wisdom to live as one who has been set free by His grace.

Day 3: The Legacy of Faith
Reading: Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Devotional: In our sermon, we were reminded that the greatest legacy we can leave is not material wealth, but a heritage of faith. Moses' words to the Israelites emphasize the importance of passing on our faith to the next generation. It's not just about teaching facts, but about living out our faith in everyday life. Reflect on your own faith journey. Who were the people who modeled faith for you? How are you passing on your faith to others, whether children, friends, or colleagues? Consider practical ways you can integrate faith discussions and practices into your daily routines, creating a lasting spiritual legacy.

Day 4: Stewardship of Time
Reading: Ephesians 5:15-17
Devotional: Our sermon highlighted that our lives consist of time, a precious and finite resource. Paul urges us to make the most of our time, living wisely in light of eternity. In a world full of distractions, how can you be more intentional with your time? Consider your daily schedule - are there moments you can reclaim for spiritual growth, service, or meaningful relationships? Remember, every moment is an opportunity to grow closer to God and to make a positive impact on others. Ask God for wisdom to discern how best to use the time He's given you, aligning your days with His purposes.

Day 5: Rich Toward God
Reading: Matthew 6:19-21
Devotional: Jesus teaches us to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Being "rich toward God" isn't about monetary wealth, but about investing in our relationship with Him and His kingdom. As you reflect on this passage, consider: What does it mean for you to be rich toward God? It might involve dedicating time to prayer, serving others, or using your gifts for His glory. Where is your heart truly focused? Our priorities reveal the location of our treasures. Today, make a conscious effort to shift your focus from temporal concerns to eternal values. Ask God to help you see opportunities to invest in His kingdom, creating riches that will last forever.
