Alex Wright, our Director of Christian Education, is excited to announce our mission trip this summer will be in Puerto Rico!
This trip is open to ALL congregation members. Our trip is scheduled for June 25 through July 2, 2022. Please leave possibly a day on each end for travel. Why Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico has been suffering for the last couple years with hurricane Maria and earthquakes. With the COVID-19 shut down, people were unable or did not want to come in to help rebuild and provide relief. Many people have left Puerto Rico if they are able to get away from the area or to try and find work to send money back to family. This leaves communities lacking in resources and the people to help rebuild.Where will we be serving?
We will be focusing our service work on two church communities. The first is a church located in Mayaguez, which will also be where our team stays. The second is a church located in Ponce. We will work on building/rebuilding and improving church building spaces for these locations. The pastors at these locations have many families and individuals that are in need but do not have enough workable space to provide relief and care for the people.Who can attend?
Yes, all congregation members are able and encouraged to serve in Puerto Rico. We will need at least one adult for every four youth that attends. If you are age 14 or older you do not need your parent to attend with you. If you are in catechism but not yet age 14 we would like to have a conversation with you to make sure you are ready to handle the responsibility of this trip. You can attend if you are under 14 but also have one of your parents attending the trip. You do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico!If you have experience or work in plumbing, construction, or electrical, our team could use you for the mission site for specific jobs in these areas. We could also use people who are fluent or know a decent amount of Spanish as that is the dominant language in Puerto Rico. What does a typical day look like?
We will wake up each morning and eat breakfast together, pack lunches and head to our work site. We will be on our worksite from around 9:00 am until 4:00 pm with a break for lunch. We will have dinner at the home of a missionary or food will be catered in for us. We will then have devotional/worship time and debrief at the end of each day before bed. Our schedule might change depending on the needs of the day and there could be times when we get the opportunity to interact with the community. Sunday we will go to church, and Friday will have a local cultural activity fun day. What is the cost?
Each person who wants to participate on the mission trip will be required to pay $200. The rest of the money will come out of church funds or will be from fundraisers. The cost break down for each person is: $80 per person per day for food and work supplies, $60 per person for a one time insurance and coordination fee, estimated $1500 for transportation and gas (about $100 per person), and an estimated $400 per person for flights. This comes to an estimated total of $1,120 per person for the whole trip.*Please note these costs are estimated and are subject to change.*
We are very excited to have this opportunity to serve in Puerto Rico. If you are interested in attending or have any questions please contact DCE Alex at firstname.lastname@example.org
