Are You Ready For Him?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

During the month of November we are probably thinking about a few things as we are headed toward winter. First, how am I going to get all these leaves off my lawn before the snow flies when most of them are still on the trees? Second, am I going to have enough time to get everything ready for winter with such a busy schedule? Third, with rising prices, will I have to scale back on my Thanksgiving meal and on my Christmas shopping? Fourth, will COVID ever come to an end? And so on, and so on, and so on…

However, when it comes to church, our hearts and minds should be dwelling on only two things. One, preparing our hearts and souls for the end times and the return of Jesus, especially with all that is going on around us. And two, being truly thankful for everything that God continues to provide for us.

Just like we want to prepare our homes and yards for the winter, so we also need to prepare our hearts, minds, and souls for Jesus’ return. In the movie, “Justice League”, Bruce Wayne (Batman) says to Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), “The sons of men live like the doomsday clock has a snooze button.” Most people, including many people who claim to be Christians, act like there will not be an end of the world, no return of Jesus, and life on earth will continue indefinitely; we need to be more concerned about taking caring of the planet, because it has to last forever. Being truly ready for Jesus’ return is spelled out in the parable of the 10 virgins; five were prepared and five were not. The five who were not ready were banned from the wedding feast.

We should be truly thankful for everything that God provides, but especially the gifts that He gives us to prepare for Jesus’ return. God provides His Holy Spirit, sending Him to us in His Word and in His Sacraments. He provides us with plenty of opportunities and resources to hear, read, learn, and take His Word to heart. He provides us with Bibles, Churches, and Bible studies where our faith can grow and be strengthened, so that it will last until He comes again or until He calls us home, whichever comes first. Right now, we all have the freedom to receive these gifts freely, without threat or persecution. That is not the way it is in all places on earth. Unfortunately, that freedom is take for granted by far too many.

Being ready in heart, soul, and mind for Jesus’ return is far more important than being ready for winter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. So be truly thankful for the spiritual gifts that God has given to prepare you, take full advantage of them and make full use of them as you prepare for Jesus to return.

“Behold, I am coming soon.” Revelation 22:12.

Are you ready for Him?
